Police Commissioner Harewood-Christopher Reinstated Days Before Contract Ends

Commissioner of Police Erla Harewood-Christopher returned to her substantive post on Monday, following a determination by the Police Service Commission.

The Police Commissioner made a brief visit to the Police Administration Building on Sackville Street and also stopped at the Ministry’s office on Abercromby Street.

She told reporters that she felt vindicated and her 43 years of service have always been with integrity.

The High Court, although ruling Mrs. Harewood-Christopher’s suspension as lawful, reasonable and proportionate, dismissed the legal claims.

The Police Service Commission confirmed the lifting of the suspension would be immediate once the Police Commissioner’s legal team received the letter of confirmation.

Mrs. Harewood-Christopher’s contract is set to end on May 14th, one day before her 62nd birthday.

Acting Commissioner of Police Junior Benjamin will return to his substantive post of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations.

Mrs. Harewood-Christopher was detained on January 31st and subsequently suspended following an investigation into the granting of a firearm permit for the acquisition of two sniper rifles to the Strategic Services Agency (SSA).
