Port of Spain Mayor Chinua Alleyne has praised the Port of Spain City Corporation’s Disaster Management Unit (DMU) for its public outreach in an attempt to mitigate the city’s issues with flooding during the rainy season.
Mayor Alleyne outlined the project and its impact at the Corporation’s monthly statutory meeting on Thursday morning.
He added that the DMU’s ongoing work is helping to make the city more resilient to extreme weather.
“Our Disaster Management Unit here in the city has been doing a significant amount of outreach in the run-up to the rainy season to ensure that we sensitise the public on steps that they should take in order to make preparations for this coming rainy season. And on behalf of the council, I would like to thank the Disaster Management Unit and the team for the work that they continue to do.”
The Mayor also noted that the investment of new equipment has a positive impact on the success of the desilting project.
“The council took a decision in the late part of last year to invest in some significant resources in our machinery to ensure that we had backhoes and dump trucks and other machinery that was required for this desilting project. We’re happy that those investments have come to fruition and we have machinery back out into the field being able to do the work that has to be done.”
Mayor Alleyne also announced that the City Corporation is planning a series of events for both staff and the public in June to commemorate the 111th anniversary of the restoration of civic and municipal rights. He is encouraging the members of the public to attend and participate in celebrating this historic milestone.
