CCHR Urges Action As UNHCR Exits T&T

The United Nations Refugee Agency is closing its doors in Trinidad and Tobago. The Caribbean Centre for Human Rights says it marks the end of a critical chapter in humanitarian work.

The organisation has expressed deep sadness over the closure of the UNHCR office in Trinidad and Tobago, adding that the agency has been a long-standing advocate for the rights and protection of refugees, offering guidance, training, and support to organisations like the CCHR.

The CCHR says it remains committed to continuing vital services, including refugee registration, legal assistance, and human rights advocacy. The organisation has written to government authorities, urging continued cooperation and support.

It is now calling on the government and civil society to help sustain the humanitarian work started under UNHCR’s leadership.
