Trinidad And Tobago Poised To Lead In AI, Says Amazon Expert

Trinidad and Tobago is in a good position to exploit artificial intelligence (AI).

That’s the view of Diya Wynn, Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) Lead at Amazon Web Services (AWS), and one of the final speakers at the American Chamber of Trinidad and Tobago’s annual Tech Islands Hub Summit.

Speaking on the topic ‘Silicon Valley To Trinidad: Building A Thriving Tech Hub,’ she said T&T’s economic diversity, along with having multiple sectors that are ready for artificial intelligence advancement, puts this country in a good position.

“You don’t need to be Silicon Valley. You need to be smarter than Silicon Valley. Trinidad and Tobago isn’t starting from zero. You get to build from the strength. And let me share some of those strategic advantages that I think you all have. The digital foundation. Trinidad is one of the strongest digital footprints in the Caribbean. You have governmental leadership with the establishment of the Ministry of Digital Transformation.”

The Amazon Web Services executive shared some statistics on AI with her audience: “The evidence is compelling – 44% of businesses using AI report enhanced automation. European businesses saved 23 hours per week with AI implementation. Teachers save six hours using AI assistance. Doctors identify problems 30% faster with AI support. This is where Caribbean opportunity lies.”

Ms. Wynn shared that success in the AI economy depends less on invention and more on how strategically nations deploy technology to solve real-world challenges.

“It’s been proven that success in the AI economy isn’t determined by who invents the technology but who deploys it most strategically and to solve human challenges. There’s a professor, Geoffrey Ding, and in his research ‘Technology and the Rise of Great Power’ he shows that successful nations don’t focus solely on the most dramatic aspect of technological change but excel often in the unassuming processes by which an innovation spreads through an economy.”
