THA Pushes Forward With Upgrades To Sporting Facilities

The Tobago House of Assembly is continuing its drive to refurbish and reopen sporting facilities on the island. The most recent projects were the Calder Hall Hard Court and another at Whim.

Speaking at Calder Hall, area representative and Secretary of Infrastructure Trevor James explained the THA’s mission to promote sport tourism and development.

“As a THA, we are committed to the youth, and we are committed to community development. We have invested $530,000 to refurbish this court to bring it to what it is tonight, and it is our hope that the young people of the environs will use this court.”

Assistant Secretary of Community Development Wane Clarke also noted that there needs to be greater use of the facilities. He said he hopes to see the return of basketball and netball teams in Calder Hall.

“Each and every village, each and every community, thinks they should have a facility, but I think we need, as a Division, we have to get to the place that we stop building new facilities and try to have those that already built, refurbished, in use, and if there is need for more, we can go on but let’s have the use of all that has previously been built.”

Plans are underway for the refurbishment of the Mt. Grace playing field to also include facilities for cricket, while the Calder Hall playing field is also on the agenda.
