Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has reaffirmed her government’s commitment to preserving religious freedoms and supporting faith-based programmes.
Speaking at the Caribbean Assembly 2025, hosted by the New Testament Church of God in Centre Pointe Mall on Thursday, the Prime Minister called on the region’s churches to remain united in the mission of service, healing, and hope.
She highlighted the vital role churches play across the region as first responders in times of crisis and despair.
“Moments like these remind me that governments can pass all the laws they want. They can try to build all the roads they want. They can try to build all the schools and all the hospitals that we want. But it is the church, often it is the church which binds. It is the church that steadies us, steadies the frightened, the church inspires hope, and assures us we are loved and protected by the greatest, most powerful authority, our beloved Lord.”
She also recalled her administration’s past support for Christian churches and added that faith-based outreach remains a cornerstone of her vision moving forward.
“Unity will be more than a photograph. It will be a shared labour and mutual respect. Worship will overflow into justice, mercy, and reconciliation. Every church will be a sanctuary for at-risk youth, and a refuge for the broken, and a launchpad for service. My government will safeguard freedom of worship. My government will protect denominational rights.”
In a call to action, the Prime Minister urged faith leaders to partner with her in building a more just and compassionate society, one that protects the vulnerable and uplifts the youth.
“I say to the bishops and organisers, thank you for the vision and labour that gave birth to this assembly. To every worship team, to every drama group, every preacher, every intercessor, thank you for your dedication to the gospel, and thank you for the dedication to our Caribbean nations. As the holy book says, you will remember, the grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of God shall stand forever. I ask you, let us leave this assembly with fire in our hearts, scripture on our lips, and service in our hands.”
The Prime Minister stressed the need for renewed unity and service across the region.
