RISE Programme Empowers Female Inmates Through Fashion And Skills Development

Fifteen female inmates marked a significant milestone today, having graduated from the Re-Integration Support & Empowerment (RISE) pilot project.

This intensive four-month programme, which ran from April to July, focused on providing participants with valuable skills in garment construction and reconstruction.

The initiative was facilitated by the Ministry of the People, Social Development and Family Services, with the overarching goal of fostering self-sufficiency and preparing the women for successful reintegration into society.

A highlight of the graduation ceremony was a vibrant fashion show, where the inmates proudly showcased the reconstructed outfits they had meticulously created. This display not only demonstrated their newly acquired technical skills but also celebrated their creativity and dedication. The RISE programme stands as a testament to a broader rehabilitative initiative geared towards empowering women and girls within the prison system, underscoring the Ministry’s steadfast commitment to their future well-being.

The ceremony saw the attendance of several key figures, including Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services, Vandana Mohit, who championed the programme. She was joined by Parliamentary Secretary Senator Dr. Natalie Chaitan-Maharaj, and Carlos Corraspe, Commissioner of Prisons.
