T&T’s Liam Carrington Finishes Seventh In World Junior Backstroke Final

Seventeen-year-old Trinidad and Tobago swimmer Liam Carrington produced a composed swim to finish seventh in the men’s 100m backstroke final at the World Junior Swimming Championships on Wednesday.

Racing from lane one, Carrington finished in 54.83 seconds, closing a tight race in which less than a second separated first from seventh.

Ireland captured gold in 53.86, and the United States took bronze in 54.06. Canada rounded out the final in eighth place, in 54.84 seconds.

The result capped a two-day run through heats and semi-finals to reach the championship race, where the teen swimmer mixed it with some of the world’s quickest juniors. He kept his nerve on the first lap, stayed in contact off the turn, and swam hard for his efforts.
