Ministry Of Tertiary Education Announces Increase In National Bursary Awards For 2024

The Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (MTEST) is pleased to announce a significant increase in the number of bursaries awarded under the National Bursary Programme in 2024.

In 2022 and 2023, under the previous administration, only 280 bursaries were awarded each year. In contrast, under the leadership of the current Government, a total of 345 bursaries have been granted for 2024, an increase of 65 additional awards, expanding access to tertiary education opportunities for citizens.

This year’s awards represent an investment of TT$51,979,789, directly supporting students in the pursuit of undergraduate studies. Notably, 60% of the recipients are female, while 40% are male, reflecting the Government’s ongoing commitment to ensuring inclusivity and equity in educational opportunities.

To date, of the 345 recipients, 300 have indicated their acceptance of the award, with 115 students already submitting the required documentation for the preparation of their National Bursary Agreement. The remaining 45 recipients have until October 30th, 2025, to confirm their interest.

Speaking on this year’s increase, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training, Senator Professor the Honourable Prakash Persad, stated, “The National Bursary Programme is a vital instrument in our mission to build a knowledge-driven society. By expanding the number of awards, this Government is ensuring that more of our young people, regardless of background, can access higher education and contribute meaningfully to national development. This is an investment not only in our students but in the future of Trinidad and Tobago.”

The Ministry underscores that this increase aligns with the Government’s commitment to:

  • Expanding educational access and equity;
  • Providing financial support to talented and hardworking students;
  • Strengthening the human capital base of the nation through higher education.

The Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training congratulates all bursary recipients and reaffirms its dedication to supporting students in achieving their educational and professional goals.

The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago remains committed to collaborating with national agencies to strengthen educational delivery systems, promote economic growth, and ensure that higher education is both accessible and transformative.
