Minister Satyakama Maharaj Unveils Plans For New Eco-Conscious Luxury Resort On North Coast

Minister of Trade, Investment and Tourism, Senator Satyakama Maharaj, unveiled a transformative new development at the Maracas Lookout on Monday.

This locally conceived initiative will feature a sophisticated, eco-conscious luxury hotel and conference center, marina, restaurant and spa among other world-class amenities, to be powered by solar energy.

The project is being executed by the private firm Global Communique (GC) Resorts Ltd.

Also speaking at the launch was advisor to the GC Resorts board, Ken Gordon, former Minister of Tourism under the NAR, who thanked Minister Maharaj and the Government of Trinidad and Tobago for their support.

In his feature remarks, Minister Maharaj described the project as a cornerstone of the government’s new tourism direction and pivotal for the nation’s tourism and economic diversification strategy.

“GC Resorts represents more than a property, it represents a strategic re-imagining of tourism in
Trinidad and Tobago,” said the Minister. “It is also an investment in economic diversification.
Tourism, together with non-energy manufacturing and creative industries, is a cornerstone of our
strategy to generate jobs, exports and innovation.”

Contrasting Trinidad and Tobago’s current annual visitor numbers, which are fewer than 500,000, with those of Singapore, a country one-sixth its size that welcomed over 15 million visitors in 2024, the Minister pointed to the potential for growth as he explained that the establishment of the GC Resorts represents a crucial step in diversifying the nation’s tourism portfolio to include business, leisure, and eco-tourism, generating more jobs, exports, and innovation.

Reiterating that the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism, and by extension the nation, is open for serious business, the Minister pledged the Ministry’s support for the project as he underscored, “GC Resorts is only the beginning. Over the coming months, we will unveil several other investment-ready projects, across both tourism and non-energy sectors, that will showcase our readiness to do business at the highest level.”

GC Resorts, designed to attract the sophisticated, eco-conscious traveler, is set to be constructed on the La Vache Peninsula, on the peninsula with the Maracas Lookout, and will be named to honour the country’s indigenous ancestors, affirming that luxury and heritage can coexist.

The project is expected to launch formally in December 2025 with the construction of the restaurant targeted for December 2026, and the opening of the hotel targeted for end 2027.

GC Resorts is managed by a board of directors led by Mr. Anthony Pinto as Chairman, Mr. Peter Taylor as Corporate Secretary, and Dr. Kirk Meighoo, Mr. Colin Coker and Mr. Roger Gordon as directors.
