New Director Takes Helm of Trinidad and Tobago’s Legal Aid Authority

The Ministry of Justice has announced the appointment of Ms. Renuka Rambhajan as the new Director/Chairman of the Legal Aid & Advisory Authority (LAAA), marking a significant leadership transition for the organization responsible for ensuring access to legal services across Trinidad and Tobago.

Minister of Justice Devesh Maharaj, MP, formally presented the Instruments of Appointment to Ms. Rambhajan during a ceremony held on September 17, 2025, expressing strong confidence in the new appointee’s qualifications and vision for the role.

“I am pleased with the choice of Director/Chairman and the leadership you will bring. I know you will execute your duties with diligence and competence,” Minister Maharaj stated during the appointment ceremony.

Ms. Rambhajan brings over two decades of distinguished legal practice and leadership experience to her new role. Her career spans both public and private sector positions, including significant roles within key government agencies and educational institutions.

From 2013 to 2014, she served as Head of Legal Services at the Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago, returning to the organization as Legal Consultant from 2017 to 2018. She also held the position of Head of Legal Services at the National Insurance Property Development Company Limited (NIPDEC), demonstrating her expertise in both child protection law and property development legal frameworks.

Her prosecutorial experience includes serving as Senior State Counsel at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, where she handled numerous high-profile criminal matters that shaped legal precedent in the country.

The appointment comes at a crucial time for the Legal Aid & Advisory Authority, which plays a vital role in ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent citizens from accessing legal representation and advice.

Minister Maharaj emphasized this fundamental principle during the ceremony, stating, “Our judicial system exists to safeguard the fundamental purpose that no citizen should ever be denied legal help.”
