The spirit of Ogun, the Orisha deity of iron and transformation, is being honoured this October in a powerful display of culture and tradition.
The annual celebration is in full swing, marked by sacred rites, practical workshops, and performances.
The ongoing event has been highlighting the tradition, delivered in the form of workshops, performances, and sacred rites.
Founder of the Idakeda group, Dara Healy, explains the qualities of Ogun, stating that personal responsibility, time management, and being the owner of the house of money are some of the notable qualities.
“Ogun is one of the most significant deities in the Ifa Orisha pantheon of gods. The Imale or the powerful force is signified with iron, steel and technology but Ogun is also very important in our actual lives. For instance Ogun is important regarding time management. Ogun is time.”
Olori of the Ogun Egbe, Shaka Alexander, reminded members of the Orisha spirituality to claim their space as guided by Ogun.
“Let us always remember that the power in the word is also the rhythm of the word. So whatever we put out there as a collective and as a people, let us always remember our Ifa Orisha identity. Whatever we say, whatever we put out there, don’t ever be ashamed to claim our space as Ogun children within this country.”
African-inspired jewellery, crafts, household items, books and more were displayed in downtown Port of Spain as an extension of the celebrations.
The festival, which began on October 10th, continues to October 20th.
