Well Services Petroleum Company Limited has confirmed the arrival in T&T of an internationally recognised US-based contractor to conduct the salvage and recovery of Rig 110, which collapsed on December 22nd, 2024.
A statement by the company today said Phase 1 of the operation has begun and will focus on risk mitigation and site stabilisation to ensure the safety of personnel, the protection of the marine environment, and the integrity of surrounding assets.
Phase 1 activities will include:
- Removal of fuel and other potential pollutants to minimise environmental impact; recovery and safe removal of loose cargo and debris from the rig and surrounding area;
- Reduction of structural stress on the rig’s legs to stabilise the wreck and prevent further damage; and
- Pre-rigging and securing of equipment on the drilling floor and derrick tower in preparation for the next phase of the operations.
Well Services said Heritage Petroleum Company Limited will support these operations to ensure that they meet the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance. Regulatory approval for the works has been granted through the issuance of a Certificate of Environmental Clearance (CEC) by the Environmental Management Authority. In addition, “Letters of No Objection” have been received from the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, the Ministry of Works and Transport – Maritime Services Division, and the Occupational Safety and Health Authority.
The company said Phase 2 of the operation will follow upon completion of the stabilisation work and will focus on the recovery of rig worker Pete Phillip’s remains, as well as the lifting and removal of the rig structure.
The company said Mr. Phillip’s family has been duly informed of the initiation of Phase 1, including the scope of activities.
