PM Persad-Bissessar Rejects Claims Of UNC Interference In SVG General Election

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC says her counterpart in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, should focus on accounting to his people for his 24 years in office rather than on the United National Congress.

In a social media message on Friday, Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar rubbished claims from the SVG Prime Minister that UNC operatives are involved in his country’s General Election and are motivated by access to lands.

She categorically refuted and rejected the allegations and asked Prime Minister Gonsalves to “identify the UNC persons he claims are in St Vincent, or stop gaslighting his citizens.”

PM Persad Bissessar also stated that the investigations into the acquisition of three high-rise luxury HDC apartments at Victoria Keyes have absolutely nothing to do with the St. Vincent and the Grenadines General Election. She said the investigations are intended to determine whether any fraudulent declarations were made, verify the source of funds for the three acquisitions, and identify how his family members were able to obtain a favourable rent-to-own arrangement two days after the April 28th General Election, before her government was installed.

PM Persad-Bissessar said that she has recently observed other CARICOM Prime Ministers and their parties engaging in active and overt campaigning in elections beyond their own borders, a practice her party firmly rejects.

“The UNC does not participate in that type of deplorable and disreputable conduct. The choice of a leader for St. Vincent and the Grenadines is solely for the people of that country. If Caribbean Prime Ministers continue cavorting around the region and interfering in the affairs and elections of member states, it is only a matter of time before CARICOM implodes.”
