Government Senator Brian Baig says the proposed penalties in the Home Invasion (Self-Defence and Defence of Property) Bill, 2025 are appropriate for the current situation in Trinidad and Tobago.
Senator Baig told the Upper House during the debate of the Home Invasion Self-Defence and Defence of Property Bill, 2025, that he was dedicating his contribution to his aunt, who was fatally wounded during a home invasion.
In an interview with TTT News, Senator Baig reiterated his stance on the matter, noting that the legislation will maintain the safety of the population.
“It gives them the opportunity to stand their ground, if a person invades their home, they no longer have to retreat, this now allows where a person can fight back. This Bill now allows for persons to think twice before invading their home.”
Senator Baig levelled criticism at an Opposition Member of Parliament who had spoken of his own home invasion but voted against the Bill in the Lower House.
He further rejected claims from another MP who suggested the Bill targets a specific group, telling the Senate that criminals do not discriminate.
