The head of a local fireworks company says the legal change to make it an offence to set off fireworks in certain areas, at certain times, without a permit is a step forward for the industry.
The amendments relating to fireworks made to the Summary Offences Act came into effect from Friday December 19th.
It is now an offence for persons to discharge fireworks without a permit and within a half mile radius of a hospital, airport, zoo, registered animal shelter, farm where animals are reared or near to a Forest Reserve or National Park.
Chief Executive Officer of FireOne Fireworks FX, Andre Abraham told TTT News that the industry has been advocating for these changes to be made and he has shared the news with his clientele. He noted that over the years scratch bombs have been banned and the use of fireworks has become safer for members of the public. Mr. Abraham said he fully endorses the need for penalties for non-compliance to laws.
