“A Taste Of Joy & Friends” Christmas Treat Brings Smiles To Nelson Street

Over two hundred children from Nelson Street, Port of Spain, and surrounding communities took part in the annual “A Taste of Joy & Friends” Christmas Treat, held on Nelson Street.

Embracing the festive atmosphere, the community was absorbed in the bouncy castles, face-painting, food and games at the event.

Chairperson, Shaakira Phillip Sutherland, explained the purpose behind the event.

“Our organisation’s name is A Taste of Joy and Friends, it’s a branch off of my business, so it’s persons from the community, we came together and decided that we want to eradicate the stigma that is attached to the community, so we’ve used our bodies and our mind to come together and have different events for the children to participate, but not just the children — the parents are inclusive in the event.”

One of the main attractions of the afternoon for both children and parents was the pony rides provided by the TTPS Police Mounted Branch.

Parents expressed their satisfaction with all the offerings at the event, championing the initiative behind it.

“So these areas are very receptive to our animals, and the engagement that we engage in, in these types of communities, we like to actually target these communities because they are not readily available to see horses, or even interact with these animals. I like that it is about bringing the community together and doing something nice for the children of this area here.”
