Minister of Health Dr. Lackram Bodoe says front-of-package warning labels on processed and prepackaged food will soon be introduced.
Speaking at the launch of the Stronger Nutritional Standards for Schools on Friday, he said the legislation will soon be taken to Parliament.
“Evidence shows that these highly visible labels help consumers, including children, and perhaps especially children and parents to quickly identify foods that are high in sugars, sodium, and unhealthy fats, and reduce the likelihood of purchasing unhealthy products and encourage food manufacturers to reformulate their products to healthier standards.”
Minister Bodoe says while he anticipates pushback from some sectors, the move is a shared responsibility that will allow for the prevention of major health conditions.
The move will complement the Ministry of Health’s “Step Into Wellness Campaign” that will also be launched soon.
“The campaign will encourage children, families, and school communities to incorporate walking, active play, and structured physical activity into daily routines, recognising that movement is not optional but essential.”
