Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services Vandana Mohit is refuting claims that social services grants are being paid late.
She was speaking during a media conference at the United National Congress’ headquarters on Sunday.
Minister of the People, Social Development and Family Services Vandana Mohit said the government will not allow misinformation to undermine public confidence where social grants are concerned.
Minister Mohit assured that social grants are being paid on time.
“I want to be very clear. January 2026 grants were processed and paid by the ministry by the 1st of January 2026. In fact, I had supermarkets sharing with me, MP, is this real? Minister, is this real? In my very own constituency, when you look at the checks, it’s dated 1st January 2026.”
The Minister shared that there was an issue the National Insurance Board previously, but assured that was addressed.
“And I can tell you, on the instruction of our Prime Minister, I liaised with our Minister of Finance and I went to the NIB as a matter of emergency to deal with that issue, which was a machine breakdown. It took us time, but we worked assiduously to ensure that we got that part to get persons grant to them. And what we did, we communicated activity with members of the public.”
Minister Mohit said any delays after the January 1st 2026 falls outside of the ministry’s control.
