Costa Rica’s ruling party, the Sovereign People’s Party (PPSO), led by Laura Fernández, is poised to win the February 1st presidential election in 2026.
Support for the PPSO has risen to 40% between December and January, bolstered by its previous loyalty to President Rodrigo Chaves and Ms. Fernández’s pledge to continue his policies.
The PPSO is indicating a strong lead over opposition candidates such as Álvaro Ramos, who is polling at just 8%, as well as other opposition parties which are facing challenges, as Ms. Fernández’s strong position suggests a potential victory.
The election is expected to be a contest between Ms. Fernández and a divided opposition, with crime and public safety as the top concerns for voters.
