Finance Minister Davendranath Tancoo has dismissed claims that Trinidad and Tobago is heading towards a currency devaluation.
Speaking on the issue, Minister Tancoo said repeated warnings by the Opposition that the country would devalue its currency have failed to materialise, just as their previous claims of impending chaos and violence had proven unfounded.
The Finance Minister urged citizens to rely on official sources for accurate information.
“There has been no devaluation and the fearmongering of the PNM, I almost said race-baiting, but that’s a factor too. The fearmongering and the race-baiting of the PNM is a desperate attempt to cover up their misdeeds as today’s front page Guardian has started to pronounce on, and more will come. The bleatings of the PNM are desperate attempts to cover up their misconduct.”
On rumours of a demonetisation of the five-cent coin, Minister Tancoo reiterated that the public should rely on information from credible sources.
He stated: “There has been no decision, at this point, with regards to a five-cent demonetisation.”
