Government Says ZOSO Bill Aims To End Violence In Communities

As debate over the Law Reform (Zones of Special Operations) (Special Security and Community Development Measures) Bill, 2026, continues in the Upper House, Government Senator Anil Roberts stressed that the legislation is about safeguarding the lives of all citizens, a core right enshrined in Trinidad and Tobago’s Constitution.

During his contribution, Mr. Roberts criticised the opposition People’s National Movement for not instituting anything for the safety of the people during their time in government.

He stated that the United National Congress-led government is in the business of stopping the bloodshed.

“The ordinary life of people in these communities that they are all of a sudden saying that the police presence will be such a dramatic manifestation of oppression in these communities. They do not understand. People are under oppression right now. They’re under siege. They cannot move. They’re afraid of their children. They cannot play football in the street like we used to play and stub we toe. They cannot play cricket. They cannot come outside. The gangs have overtaken these, and for anybody to come in the Senate and bring this disingenuous argument that safety and security will stop ordinary life, ordinary life in these communities is not life at all. It is closer to death.”
