Education Minister Confirms Daily Safety Checks And Police Patrols At Rio Claro East Secondary

The Minister of Education, Dr. Michael Dowlath, has assured that the Rio Claro East Secondary School remains safe and secure for students, staff, and parents.

Just last month, Minister Dowlath visited the Rio Claro East Secondary School along with Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander and Member of Parliament for Mayaro Nicholas Morris following reports of cyber threats issued to members of staff and students over alleged bullying.

Answering a question in the Lower House on Friday on this ongoing matter, Dr. Dowlath stated that Ministry officials, along with the Police Service and Ministry of Homeland Security, have implemented enhanced security measures at the school.

“One additional school-oriented police officer was installed at the school. In total, there are three school-oriented police officers at the school. In addition, an additional safety officer was installed at the school. On a daily basis, there is a rotation of between three and four MTS security officers. The Rio Claro Police has been providing static patrols at the beginning of the school day from 7:30am to 8:45am and at the end of the school period, 2pm to 3pm. The MTS sergeants have been on regular patrols during the course of the day.”

The Education Minister said entry and exit protocols have also been strengthened and searches are conducted.

“Students’ attendance has increased, teachers are in attendance. The Ministry’s Health and Safety Division has been monitoring the school’s safety on a daily basis. The SSSD Division has been providing psychosocial support for both students and teachers. All reports have been made to the police about the cyber threats. My information is that the police are pursuing this matter actively.”
