Government Moves To Strengthen Beach Safety

MP Nicholas Morris, Member of Parliament for Mayaro and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, has welcomed new measures to improve beach safety in Mayaro and nearby communities for the Carnival season.

Following a recent drowning incident, MP Morris met with Minister of Defence Wayne Sturge to discuss immediate steps and long-term plans to secure the beaches.

He also met with lifeguard teams to review priority areas and resources.

Cabinet has approved increased lifeguard staffing at key locations, including Grand Lagoon Beach, Bon Espoir Beach, and Mitan River Point.

The South Eastern Lifeguard Service has received jet skis to assist with patrols, and reserve lifeguards will be on duty throughout the Carnival weekend.

MP Morris expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister and Minister Sturge for the swift action, praising the dedication of the lifeguard teams.

He emphasised that these measures aim to ensure public safety while a longer-term, sustainable beach safety plan is being developed.
