Planning Minister Kennedy Swaratsingh Supports PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s Decision To Initiate State Of Emergency In Trinidad And Tobago

The Honourable Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, through her leadership of this Government and the National Security Council, continuously demonstrates zero tolerance for the criminal elements and actions that threaten the existence of citizens across Trinidad and Tobago. This current State of Emergency reflects the Government’s unwavering commitment to protect the lives, security and well-being of our citizens at a time when firm and coordinated national action is required.

The declaration of a State of Emergency is never taken lightly. It is a constitutional tool reserved for circumstances where extraordinary measures are necessary to safeguard public order and restore stability. The Prime Minister’s leadership in this regard is in clear recognition of the gravity of the challenges confronting our nation and the urgent need to empower law enforcement and national security agencies with the resources and authority required to respond effectively.

As Minister of Planning, Economic Affairs and Development, I recognise that public safety and national stability are fundamental prerequisites for sustainable development, economic growth and investor confidence. No nation can fully achieve its developmental ambitions without ensuring that its citizens feel safe in their communities and that institutions are able to operate in an environment of law, order and mutual respect. The steps taken by the Government are therefore not only about immediate security concerns, but also about preserving the long-term social and economic well-being of Trinidad and Tobago.  I wish to express my full support for the actions taken to keep Trinidad and Tobago safe.
