Minister Swaratsingh: Prime Minister’s Engagement With US President A Turning Point

Planning, Economic Affairs and Development Minister and Minister in the Ministry of Finance Dr. Kennedy Swaratsingh states that Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s recent diplomatic engagement with US President Donald Trump at the Shield of the Americas Summit represents a potentially significant turning point in the strategic relationship between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States.

This meeting signals the emergence of a new phase of hemispheric cooperation in which security, energy and trade are increasingly intertwined and through the Prime Minister, this engagement will strengthen Trinidad and Tobago’s economic resilience and enhance national security while expanding our role as a regional energy, trade and logistics hub.

The Summit’s goals to coordinate regional responses to organised crime, migration pressures and geopolitical competition in our hemisphere also augur well for Trinidad and Tobago’s economy because public safety and national stability are fundamental prerequisites for sustainable development, economic growth and investor confidence.  We cannot fully achieve our developmental ambitions without ensuring that citizens feel safe in their communities and our institutions are able to operate in an environment of law and order.  Through this partnership, we are able provide a level of security and safety that boosts the confidence of local as well as foreign investors in our society and economy.

Investors, particularly in manufacturing, energy and logistics are highly sensitive to issues of crime and stability, by strengthening regional security frameworks and demonstrating strong international partnerships, Trinidad and Tobago can improve investor confidence and reinforce our reputation as a stable destination for foreign direct investment.

Beyond security cooperation, the summit also served as an opportunity for high-level energy diplomacy. On the margins of the meeting, the Prime Minister held discussions with senior U.S. officials including the U.S. Secretary of Energy, exploring issues related to energy security and opportunities in Trinidad and Tobago.

Another important dimension of the Prime Minister’s diplomatic engagement involves trade and market access. According to regional reports, the Trinidad and Tobago delegation also engaged with U.S. trade and commerce officials during the summit.  The United States is already Trinidad and Tobago’s largest trading partner. Strengthening political ties with Washington can translate into:

  • Greater export opportunities for manufactured goods.
  • Increased tourism flows from the U.S. market.
  • Expanded cooperation in digital services and technology.

For a country seeking to diversify beyond hydrocarbons, these opportunities are critical. Enhanced U.S. engagement can support the development of sectors such as creative industries, business process outsourcing, renewable energy, and financial services.  For Trinidad and Tobago, alignment with the United States, the region’s largest economic power, can open new avenues for investment, technology transfer and market access.

Our Prime Minister’s participation in the Shield of the Americas Summit and her engagement with President Donald Trump and members of his Cabinet represent more than a diplomatic courtesy call. They signal the potential emergence of a deeper economic and strategic partnership between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States. Through sustained cooperation, Trinidad and Tobago’s economic growth trajectory could be reinforced while cementing our role as a key player in the Caribbean basin.

In an era where geopolitical alliances increasingly shape economic outcomes, Trinidad and Tobago’s ability to cultivate strong ties with the United States may prove to be one of the most important determinants of our long-term prosperity and development.
