US Supports TEMA With Training And Equipment

The United States Government (USG), through the United States Embassy, Port of Spain and the US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) is providing support to the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), with the provision of training and equipment aimed at strengthening its capacity to manage its Disaster Relief Warehouses (DRW) efficiently and transparently.

This initiative builds on the longstanding bilateral relationship between the United States and Trinidad and Tobago, which saw the construction of TEMA’s DRW in 2016 through SOUTHCOM’s Humanitarian Assistance Program (HAP). Valued at USD $265,000, the initiative will be executed in two phases and is designed to enhance disaster preparedness, foster self-reliance, and deliver measurable benefits for both nations.

The first phase began on March 9th with a five-day training session at the TEMA Emergency Operations Centre in Tobago. Fifteen TEMA personnel will be equipped with the skills to implement warehouse inventory control software, ensuring effective implementation and long-term sustainability. The second phase will be equipment delivery and installation, which will be done later this year.

The initiative provides critical warehouse equipment and hands-on training, enabling TEMA to independently lead disaster response efforts. It makes America more secure by enhancing the capacity of the T&T Government to prepare for and respond to natural disasters, reducing the need for assistance from the United States in the event of a widespread disaster.

U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Charlie J. Franta III in remarks at the opening of the week of training said, “As we celebrate Freedom 250, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, we reflect not only on our founding ideals, but also on the enduring role of diplomacy and partnerships like this in shaping our nation’s journey and global impact. We honor the enduring partnership between our two great nations — two vibrant democracies — and our military cooperation stands as a pillar of this partnership. By investing in disaster preparedness and empowering local agencies, we not only strengthen regional stability but also ensure the safety and well-being of Trinbagonian and American citizens. Together, we are building a more resilient future for both our great nations.”
