Minister of Homeland Security and Member of Parliament for Tunapuna, Roger Alexander, is stressing the importance of caring for the elderly.
On Wednesday, he kicked off Mother’s Day celebrations in his constituency with a visit to the mothers at St. Peter’s Home for the Elderly, where they were treated to manicures, pedicures, and massages.
Minister Alexander said the day of pampering was a gesture of love and appreciation.
“We came to St. Peter’s today to intermingle with the ladies, the mothers who would have played a role in someone or everyone’s development. We have teachers, we have lawyers, we have a number of persons here. There’s a nurse. So there’s a lot of persons here who we wanted to meet and intermingle with. You know what? And give them a good day. To show them that we appreciate what they would have done. We, as a constituency, we love to do things for and with people. So that is exactly what’s happening here today.”
MP Alexander said the elderly must not be neglected.
“That foundation of family starts with the grandmother that you know. Sometimes growing up, your great-grandmother might have died. It was somewhere along those lines. So you start with your grandmother and your mother, and because of what they would have done in terms of shaping and structuring you, you turn out to be a fine citizen, respectable in every way and understanding authority and all of these things.”
The ladies were not the only ones entertained, as the MP was also treated to song and poetry from the residents of the home.
“Sir, on behalf of the residents and staff, we do welcome you and appreciate your kindness, your love, your concern, and whatever there is to add to it. But we are grateful for that. And we thank you and your team for being here to see what we are doing, how we are reacting. So don’t forget you have a room here, so when you want to come, you have a furnished room to rest.”
