Minister Of Justice Presents Instruments Of Appointment To The New Legal Aid & Advisory Authority Board

The Honourable Devesh Maharaj, MP, Minister of Justice & Minister in the Office of the Attorney General, presented Instruments of Appointment to the newly appointed Board of the Legal Aid & Advisory Authority (LAAA) during a ceremony held at the Authority’s Head Office on May 18, 2026.

Minister Maharaj extended congratulations to the newly appointed Board Members and underscored the critical role they will play in advancing the governance, oversight and strategic direction of the Authority.

“You all can count on me to champion your cause,” he said to Board members, adding that they are entrusted with shaping the strategic direction of the Authority, strengthening institutional effectiveness, and ensuring services remain aligned with the needs of the people of Trinidad and Tobago.

The appointment of the new Board comes at a significant moment in the history of the Legal Aid & Advisory Authority, as the organisation approaches fifty years of dedicated service to the people of Trinidad and Tobago. The newly appointed Board is expected to provide guidance that will further strengthen service delivery, enhance operational efficiency, and support the ongoing transformation of legal aid services in keeping with the Ministry of Justice’s mandate.

The Ministry of Justice and the Legal Aid & Advisory Authority remain firmly committed to strengthening access to justice for all citizens. Through ongoing reform initiatives, expanded outreach, and the continued enhancement of legal aid services, both institutions are working to ensure that no individual is denied legal support due to financial or social barriers. This commitment reflects a broader national priority of promoting fairness, equality before the law, and the protection of fundamental rights within the justice system.
