PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar Mourns Passing Of Former NAR Minister Herbert Atwell

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC has expressed sorrow at the passing of former National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR) Minister Herbert Atwell, who died over the weekend.

In a statement on Monday, the Prime Minister noted Mr. Atwell’s role when he served “during an important and transformative period in our nation’s political history and was among those entrusted with national leadership during the NAR administration of 1986.”

She also reflected on her time working with him.

“More than four decades ago, I had the opportunity to work alongside Mr. Atwell during that era of public service and national transition. I therefore remember him not only as a former Government Minister, but also as part of a generation of political figures who contributed to the national discourse and development of Trinidad and Tobago during a defining period in our democracy.”

Describing public service as a responsibility requiring commitment, the Prime Minister stated that Mr. Atwell had embodied those values during his time in office.

“Public service requires sacrifice, commitment, and a willingness to dedicate oneself to the people of the country. Mr. Atwell answered that call to national service and devoted years of his life to public affairs and to the representation of the people.”

She added that his contribution forms part of the country’s political history.

“At moments such as these, we are reminded of the contributions of those who helped shape our nation’s political history and democratic development over the decades. May God grant Herbert Atwell eternal peace, and may His strength and comfort remain with all who grieve this loss.”

The Prime Minister extended condolences on behalf of the country.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago, and on my own behalf, I extend sincere and heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, former colleagues, friends, and all those mourning his passing.”
