The election of Trinidad and Tobago to a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term represents one of the most significant diplomatic achievements in our nation’s history. As Minister of Planning, Economic Affairs and Development, I extend heartfelt congratulations to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago on this historic accomplishment.

Securing the support of 181 countries and earning the confidence of the international community is a remarkable endorsement of Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to responsible global leadership, peace, security and sustainable development. This achievement is a direct reflection of the strategic vision, tireless diplomacy and distinguished leadership of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, whose engagement with world leaders and unwavering advocacy for our nation’s interests have elevated Trinidad and Tobago’s standing on the global stage.

While membership on the United Nations Security Council is often viewed through the lens of diplomacy and international relations, it also carries profound implications for national development. In today’s interconnected world, peace, security, economic growth and sustainable development are inseparable. Our presence on the Security Council will provide Trinidad and Tobago with an unprecedented platform that contributes to shaping global policies affecting small island developing states and developing economies.

Importantly, Trinidad and Tobago’s priorities of curbing the illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons, advancing the protection of women and children in peace and security frameworks and addressing the emerging challenges and opportunities associated with artificial intelligence and global security align closely with our national development objectives. These priorities speak directly to building safer communities, strengthening social resilience, fostering innovation and creating an environment that supports sustainable economic growth and human development.

As a member of the Security Council, Trinidad and Tobago will be better positioned to advocate for international cooperation on issues that impact our region, including crime and security, climate resilience, technological advancement, economic stability and social inclusion. This enhanced global profile can facilitate stronger diplomatic partnerships, attract greater international collaboration and investment opportunities and support our efforts to achieve long-term sustainable development goals.

The Government’s success in securing this seat demonstrates that Trinidad and Tobago is not merely participating in global conversations but helping to shape them. It is a powerful statement that our nation, despite its size, possesses the expertise, credibility and leadership necessary to make meaningful contributions to international peace and security.

Through this achievement, we celebrate not only a diplomatic victory but also a national development milestone. Being elected to the UNSC reinforces our place among the community of nations and underscores our commitment to building a prosperous, secure and sustainable future for all citizens.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Trinidad and Tobago continues to demonstrate that bold vision, principled leadership and effective diplomacy can open new pathways for national advancement and international influence. As we prepare to assume this important responsibility, we do so with pride, confidence and a renewed commitment to serving both our people and the global community.
