Defence Minister, Led By Former AG, To Sue Opposition MP Marvin Gonzales For Defamation

Minister of Defence Wayne Sturge has moved to take legal action against Opposition MP Marvin Gonzales over allegations that he “came into power by being funded by drug traffickers and drug dealers”.

In a pre-action protocol letter dated Monday, June 8th, 2026, Minister Sturge’s attorneys accused MP Gonzales of making “false, reckless and wholly unjustified” statements at a June 3rd public meeting in San Juan, where he allegedly made the comments.

The legal team, Freedom Law Chambers, led by former Attorney General Senior Counsel Anand Ramlogan, said the claim was broadcast live on the People’s National Movement’s Facebook page to a wide audience and has caused “serious harm” to Minister Sturge’s reputation.

They argue that the remarks suggest that Minister Sturge is “corrupt, compromised by criminal interests, and unfit to hold office as Minister of Defence and MP”, allegations the letter describes as “entirely false”.

The letter demands that MP Gonzales withdraw the statements, issue a full apology, remove all related publications, and propose compensation within 14 days.
