Mexico Open World Cup With Win Over South Africa

Co-hosts Mexico made a perfect start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating South Africa 2-0 before a capacity crowd at the historic Estadio Azteca.

Julián Quiñones scored the tournament’s first goal in the ninth minute, while veteran forward Raúl Jiménez sealed the victory with a towering header in the 66th minute.

The goal was Jiménez’s first at a World Cup and his 46th international goal, moving him level with Jared Borgetti in second place on Mexico’s all-time scoring list, six behind record-holder Javier Hernández.

The match was marred by disciplinary drama, with three red cards shown. South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were both dismissed, leaving their side to finish with nine men, while Mexico’s César Montes was sent off in stoppage time.
