CARICOM Mourns Passing Of Cricket Legend Sir Garfield Sobers

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has joined Barbados and the global cricket fraternity in mourning the passing of Sir Garfield Sobers, the legendary West Indian all-rounder, who died at the age of 89.

A recipient of CARICOM’s highest honour, the Order of the Caribbean Community, in 1998, Sobers was celebrated not only for his brilliance on the field but also for his humility and grace beyond it.

The Barbadian icon played 93 Tests between 1954 and 1974, scoring 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 and taking 235 wickets.

His unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958 stood as the highest individual Test score for 36 years until fellow West Indian Brian Lara surpassed it in 1994.

CARICOM described him as “a son of the Caribbean” whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to pursue excellence and represent the region with distinction.
