Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says new crime data shows a significant nationwide decrease in serious crimes across Trinidad and Tobago, pointing to what she described as steady progress in anti-crime efforts under the ongoing State of Emergency.
According to figures released by the Prime Minister, serious crimes across all police divisions fell from 6,469 incidents during the January 1 to July 20 period in 2025, to 5,514 incidents over the same period in 2026, a decrease of 955 incidents, or 15 percent, nationwide. The 2026 total was also 1,217 incidents lower than the equivalent period in 2024, the data showed.
The largest reductions were recorded in the Northern Division, where serious crime fell by 32 percent, followed by the North Eastern Division at 30 percent, and the Eastern and Central Divisions, both at 22 percent. “The data clearly shows a safer T&T in 2026 with a nationwide decrease in serious crimes,” the Prime Minister said.
Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar linked the serious crime figures to previously released data on murders, noting, “This data on serious crimes declines combined with the data showing that there have been approximately 400 less murders than projected in 2025 to July 2026 clearly shows that the TTPS and government are making steady progress with anti-crime efforts during the SOE.”
In concluding, the Prime Minister acknowledged that further work remains to reduce crime numbers stating, “Trinidad and Tobago is becoming safer but there is still a lot of work ahead to bring down the numbers further. I encourage citizens to support our protective services who are working diligently to bring safety, security, and happiness to our communities.”
