Tributes continue to pour in for late United National Congress Councillor Vashti Sharmin Sookhoo, whose last rites, held at her home on Thursday, brought together family, friends, community members, Government ministers, local government representatives, community councils and other well-wishers to honour her life and service.
Ms Sookhoo represented the Reform/Manahambre electoral district and was remembered as a dedicated, warm and unwavering public servant who devoted herself to her family, community, the UNC and the wider country.
Speaking during the councillor’s funeral, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, overcome with emotion, remembered Ms Sookhoo for her dedication and tireless efforts to make life better for those around her.
The Prime Minister reflected on the lasting impact a person can make during their lifetime, saying Ms Sookhoo’s life was spent in service. She also praised her unwavering commitment to her beliefs and encouraged fellow councillors and community representatives to continue her work.
Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen remembered Ms Sookhoo’s loyalty and shared memories of working alongside her and the Prime Minister during floods, internal party elections, general elections and local government elections.
UNC Deputy Political Leader Jearlean John reflected on Ms Sookhoo’s warmth, recalling her hugs and constant presence at UNC events.
Minister of Finance and UNC Chairman Davendranath Tancoo paid tribute on behalf of the party’s National Executive, highlighting Ms Sookhoo’s years of service to the UNC.
Minister of Public Utilities Barry Padarath remembered Ms Sookhoo as a “loyal and dedicated UNC supporter”.
Princes Town MP Dr Aiyna Ali and Naparima MP Dr Narindra Roopnarine also remembered Ms Sookhoo for her love of people, while members of the Reform Community Development Committee highlighted her contributions to the community.
The Prime Minister extended blessings and condolences to the late councillor’s family and thanked those who gathered to honour her, saying their presence reflected the love and support she had inspired.
She said Ms Sookhoo’s hard work and legacy would live on through her commitment to community service.
