Professor Ghany: PM’s Independence Day Address Successfully Raised Public Consciousness

Political scientist, Professor Hamid Ghany analyzed Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar’s independence day message.

He described it as an untraditional independence anniversary message that achieved what the Prime Minister was aiming for.

“The only way that that change in trajectory comes is by raising the level of consciousness about the things that we need to do. And the message has scertainly done that. She’s gotten the attention of a lot of people. And I think that’s exactly what she wanted. If the message had gone by like the traditional message of the past, You know, you talk all the nice flowery, lofty ideals. Stuff that has come to characterize these messages there would have been no impact.”

The political scientist added that the message also tracks along the vein of other government changes.

“Everything is connected, the bold steps she’s making in other areas. She’s not doing it by the traditional mould. She’s changing the mould, creating a different mould and is having that kind of impact that she wanted to have because many of the policy measures are quite bold. I mean to breathe life back into the iron and steel plant at Point Lisas is just but one example of what has happened. It lay dormant for 10 years, nothing was going on there. Now it’s coming back to life everybody wants to come buzzing around.”

He further stated that significant progress has been made with the National Gas Company, attributing these achievements to the Prime Minister’s bold leadership and initiatives.
