The Ministry of Health is seeking to reassure the public that COVID-19 remains at low levels across Trinidad and Tobago.
According to the Ministry’s latest laboratory data, up to August 2026, just four positive COVID-19 cases were detected among 731 samples processed.
Data from the Trinidad Public Health Laboratory supported that assessment, with four positive cases recorded in August after no positive cases were detected between May and July.
The Ministry said what it is observing instead is an expected seasonal increase in other respiratory viruses, particularly Influenza A, including H1N1 and H3N2 strains, as well as Influenza B.
The Ministry noted that these illnesses often share symptoms with COVID-19, which may contribute to public perceptions that COVID-19 infections are rising.
The Health Ministry also stressed that the country’s surveillance network remains robust, with samples collected from major hospitals across Trinidad and Tobago providing a reliable picture of national trends and reducing concerns about underreporting.
The Ministry said it continues to monitor the situation closely through ongoing respiratory surveillance and genomic testing in partnership with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) to identify any emerging variants.
In the meantime, it is urging members of the public to maintain good respiratory hygiene, seek medical attention if symptoms become severe, and take advantage of the free influenza vaccine available at public health centres throughout the country.
