In a heart-warming display of civic pride, a father and son dedicated part of their Sunday morning to cleaning up an area littered with rubbish, showing that citizens remain committed to making a positive difference in their communities.
Route 2 maxi-taxi operator Jason Cumberbatch and his son, Jayshawn, voluntarily took it upon themselves to clear an unsightly, garbage-strewn spot that had become an eyesore for residents and commuters alike. According to Mr Cumberbatch, the accumulation of debris near the walkway at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex was being tracked into maxis by passengers who waited at the location.
Rather than ignore the problem, the father and son rolled up their sleeves and set to work, determined to improve the appearance of the area and contribute to a cleaner environment.
Their efforts did not go unnoticed. Fellow maxi-taxi operator Vernelle Carter witnessed the clean-up and was inspired by their selfless act. She recorded the father-and-son team as they worked and commended them for taking the initiative.
Ms Carter also used the opportunity to encourage other citizens to follow their example by taking greater responsibility for their surroundings.
The simple but meaningful gesture serves as a reminder that positive change often begins with individuals who are willing to take action, inspiring others to do the same and helping to create a cleaner, more pleasant environment for everyone.
Building on the efforts of Mr Cumberbatch and his son, the Maxi Taxi Association said it plans to maintain the tidiness of this location, as well as sites in Curepe, St Augustine and San Juan, with volunteer drivers carrying out clean-up activities each weekend.
