Trinidadian singer and songwriter Coutain has been named Billboard’s Caribbean Up-And-Comer for September 2026, marking a major milestone for the Sangre Grande-born artist and his rapidly expanding presence in Caribbean music.
In its September 2026 feature, Billboard spotlights Coutain for his ability to breathe new life into Trinidadian classics through smart songwriting and smooth, soulful vocals, highlighting an artist whose sound moves fluidly across soca, dancehall, reggae and R&B.
Born Denzil Coutain in Trinidad and Tobago, the artist began releasing music in 2019 with his debut single, “African Dancer.” Since then, he has developed a versatile catalogue that includes the projects Product of Big Blood (2020), G Syde Tape, Pt. 3 with Brooklyn Decent (2022), and 1996 (2024).
Coutain’s recent momentum has been driven in part by his creative partnership with Trinidadian producer Michael “Tano” Montano. The pair collaborated on “Junction” in 2024 before delivering “Jamtown” in 2025, a track that has accumulated nearly two million official on-demand U.S. streams, according to Luminate.
His December 2025 release, “Wedding Band,” further established Coutain as an artist committed to connecting Trinidad’s musical heritage with a contemporary sound. The song reimagines Mighty Sparrow’s classic “Mr. Walker,” pairing elements of calypso’s social commentary with soca’s infectious energy.
The recognition arrives following an important year for Coutain. In Summer 2026, he joined KestheBand in Europe as an opening act on its Roots, Rock, Soca Tour, gaining valuable experience on a major international stage. He has also received three nominations at the 2026 Caribbean Music Awards, including a nomination for Best New Soca Artist.
For Coutain, the Billboard recognition represents more than a personal achievement. It reflects his broader ambition to use music to showcase the depth and creativity coming out of the Caribbean. “A long-term goal for me is to reach a place where I could help the next generation and show the world that the Caribbean has so much to offer,” Coutain told Billboard. “We have stars living right here.”
Also emerging on the Billboard’s sharp radar for is AZ Chike, who has been named the Hip Hop Up-And-Comer for September 2026. The Los Angeles rapper has already attracted major attention through his feature on Kendrick Lamar’s hit single “Peekaboo,” from Lamar’s critically-acclaimed GNX album. The track received an even broader spotlight when Lamar performed “Peekaboo” during his Apple Music Super Bowl LIX halftime show in February 2025. Coutain and AZ Chike’s growing profiles place them among the emerging names generating promising momentum for the next generation of music.
With a forthcoming debut solo studio album in development, Coutain is carrying the momentum of his breakout year into his next chapter. While the project is expected following Trinidad Carnival 2027, he continues to build on a sound that refuses to be confined to a single genre.
