The 2026 National Awards Ceremony recognised outstanding contributions across education, research, culture and public service.
From cultural icons and educators to researchers, this year’s recipients reflected on the impact of their life’s work and the importance of leaving a legacy of service and excellence.
Among those honoured was political scientist, educator and researcher Dr Maukesh Basdeo, who received the Chaconia Medal (Gold).
Also receiving the Chaconia Medal (Gold) was Keshmani Dhaniram-Gosine, who reflected on some of the proudest achievements of her 40-year career in education.
“Normally I am most proud when my so-called underachievers do extremely well, but we have some great successes at Ghandi (Vedic Memorial) where I served as principal, and as a teacher for forty years, we had three first places, two second, thirds, we had 200-plus children in the top 200, and what was good is that I never really left the classroom, although I served as principal for 14 years.”
Accomplished epidemiologist, research methodologist, and evidence-based medicine expert, Dr Paul Elias Alexander, was also honoured with the Chaconia Medal (Gold).
Speaking with TTT News, he emphasised the critical role of scientific research and encouraged young people to actively pursue careers in the field.
“Science and medicine, and moving forward in society, doesn’t move forward unless we build on prior research so the science is never settled. People who make that statement about the data is settled, science is settled on the issue, that is a fake fraud statement. We must continue ongoing research and build on what others have done before, that is absolutely important.”
Meanwhile, Soca star Destra Garcia, who received the Gold Medal for the Development of Women, said the award left her feeling humbled.
Reflecting on her 27-year career in the entertainment industry, she encouraged young women to believe in their abilities and remain confident in the pursuit of their goals.
“Well, I want all women coming up to always remember you are enough, believe in yourself and great things happen, believe in God and pray every day. I know it’s hard as women in any genre, in any line of work, but you have to know that you deserve the best; work towards it; confidence is everything.”
Members of the diplomatic corps and government officials also came together to honour the awardees.
