Member of Parliament for La Brea, Clyde Elder, spent part of his day on Tuesday with postal workers in his constituency, noting that the visit was aimed at showing appreciation for their dedication and the vital service they provide to communities.
The Minister in the Ministry of Public Utilities joined one of the postal routes in the constituency and visited the TTPost branch in La Brea, where he engaged with staff and learned more about their daily operations.
“The point I was making is that because of you being so involved in the community, being such a regular face and figure in the community, then at some point in time this camaraderie builds between a postal worker and the community. Because as simple as you see these bills here, these bills are very important because people need to sometimes prove proof of address. You understand. You do business, and you need a bill, right?”
Minister Elder said postal workers perform an essential service that often goes unnoticed.
“It impacts people’s lives in different ways. The job that you all do impacts people’s lives in different ways, yeah. Sometimes I feel that it is not recognised enough, right, by a lot of us in society. We don’t really appreciate the work that postal workers do. Maybe if two or three weeks pass and they don’t get mail, then ‘what happen, what happen to TT Post, boy, I ain’t get no mail.’ But when they do get it and get it regularly, it becomes so accustomed and so familiar that it is sometimes taken for granted.”
Supervisor at TTPost La Brea, Marvin Moore, also highlighted some of the behind-the-scenes work involved in ensuring mail reaches the correct destination.
“There are different La Breas within Trinidad and Tobago, right, so sometimes we may get mail that is addressed La Brea but it does not fall in our La Brea. It may be La Brea Street, La Brea Trace, La Brea Village in Mayaro. So my job is to break it down first and to take out the mail that belongs to us.”
