The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is aware of a video circulating on social media which shows a man seated in a vehicle verbally and physically abusing and threatening a woman in the passenger seat.
A report has been made at the Couva Police Station and officers of the Special Victims Unit, Region 2 have launched an investigation.
No. 19042 WPC Persad is leading that investigation. Statements are being recorded, and the matter is receiving the TTPS’s full attention.
In the interest of the victim’s dignity and privacy, members of the public are asked to refrain from further sharing the video.
The TTPS takes this opportunity to speak directly to women who may be in abusive relationships. Abuse is not limited to physical
violence. Threats, intimidation, insults and controlling behaviour are also forms of abuse, and no one should have to endure them.
The TTPS offers the following advice:
Report the abuse. Do not suffer in silence. Make a report at any police station or Special Victims Unit, and allow the police to
address the matter. Officers are trained to respond to domestic
violence with sensitivity and confidentiality.
Confide in someone you trust. Let a friend, family member or colleague know what you are experiencing. A trusted confidant can
support you, check on your wellbeing, and seek help on your behalf if needed.
Have a safety plan. Keep important documents, a phone and emergency contact numbers where you can reach them quickly.
Agree on a code word with your confidant that signals you need help.
Keep a record. Where it is safe to do so, save threatening messages, voice notes, photographs or videos. These may assist the police in an investigation.
Know your options. Victims may apply to the Magistrates’ Court for a Protection Order under the Domestic Violence Act.
