The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has launched a Road Safety Unit within its Traffic Management Division. The unit will collect and analyse road traffic accident and compliance data to support decisions aimed at reducing accidents and improving compliance with road traffic laws.
Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Senator Eli Zakour said the launch marks a significant step towards strengthening the Ministry’s data-driven approach to road safety.
The unit will focus on collecting, analysing and interpreting accident and compliance data to identify trends, patterns, high-risk locations and levels of compliance with road traffic laws.
The unit will be led by Chief Traffic Engineer Adande Piggott and supported by a technical team. It will carry out statistical analysis and mapping of road traffic accidents, and will analyse compliance data. The Ministry said this will provide reliable information and evidence for road safety planning and initiatives.
The Ministry will also work with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to strengthen how accident and compliance data is collected. It said this will ensure that road safety planning is backed by accurate and timely information.
The Ministry said it is taking a more data-driven approach to road safety, with decisions guided by accurate information and a clear understanding of accident trends and compliance levels.
