Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC says the Government will continue to pass legislation to benefit the law-abiding citizens.
The Prime Minister made the statement on social media on Wednesday, following the passage of legislation to increase the minimum age limits for gambling, marijuana, alcohol and tobacco use.
She noted that the legislation only received the support of the Government in the Senate, with none coming from the Opposition or Independent benches.
“The PNM’s answer to protecting our youth is giving them marijuana to smoke and low-paying, menial welfare jobs. The PNM parliamentarians only exist to serve the owners of the PNM while simultaneously destroying your children’s futures.”
The Prime Minister also criticised the Independent senators for voting against the legislation, accusing them of opposing measures aimed at protecting young people.
“Their vote against protecting young people was consistent with the hateful behaviour that this loathsome and grotesque group of persons has shown towards legislation intended to benefit our children. Recall that they also voted against expanding the Children’s Life Fund to benefit children suffering from life-threatening conditions.”
The Prime Minister said she remains committed to protecting all citizens, especially children.
The legislation will now be sent to the President to be proclaimed and brought into effect in early 2027.
