Government Allocates $7.321 Billion To National Security

During Finance Minister, Davendranath Tancoo’s, budget presentation for fiscal 2026-2027, he said National Security remains a high priority of the government, with the proposed allocation for the sector set at $7.321 billion.

The minister said more resources are planned for the coming year to bolster the gains that have been achieved.

Among them, the recruitment of more police and prisons officers, increased security at the Golden Grove prison, and the integration of more technology to give law enforcement additional tools in the fight against crime.

“Mr. Speaker this government is evolving our approach to policing through an integrated digital platform and expanded use of facial recognition technology, automatic license plate recognition, geofencing, surveillance systems and other intelligence capabilities. It is well known too that our geographical location makes Trinidad and Tobago vulnerable to the movement of illegal firearms, narcotics, narcotics, human traffickers, and wider transnational criminal networks. We are therefore strengthening our borders by enhancing maritime surveillance, intelligence sharing and operational coordination.”
