T&T Prison Service Announces Closure Of Claxton Bay Correctional Facility

The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service (TTPrS) advises that the Claxton Bay Correctional Facility, which was made available to the Service by Vision on Mission during the COVID-19 pandemic, officially ceased operations as a correctional holding facility on 14th October 2026.

The facility was brought into operation pursuant to Legal Notice No. 331 of 2020 – The Prisons Order, 2020, made by the Minister under section 5(1) of the Prisons Act, Chapter 13:01, thereby providing the legal authority for the facility to be used as a prison facility during the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the time, additional accommodation was necessary to support the Prison Service’s COVID-19 response and safeguard the health and security of inmates and officers. The availability of the Claxton Bay Correctional facility assisted the Service in effectively managing the unprecedented operational challenges presented by the pandemic.

Commissioner of Prisons, Mr. Elvin Scanterbury, acknowledged the important role played by Vision on Mission during this period.

“On behalf of the Executive and the entire Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service, I extend our sincere gratitude to Vision on Mission for making the Claxton Bay Correctional facility available to us at a time when additional accommodation was critical. This support demonstrated the value of partnership and collaboration in responding to national challenges.”

Commissioner Scanterbury also acknowledged the prison officers and other personnel who served at the facility for their professionalism, dedication and commitment throughout its operation.

The closure of the Claxton Bay Correctional Facility marks the conclusion of an important chapter in the Prison Service’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Service remains committed to maintaining safe and secure custodial operations while advancing its mandate of rehabilitation and successful reintegration.
