Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander says the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service has intensified operations in Central as investigations continue into the murder of attorney-at-law Taradath Singh in Charlieville and the double murder of Kavita Deosaran and Cheryl Dixon at a spa in Couva.
Speaking in the House of Representatives on Friday, he said the TTPS has increased intelligence-led operations and targeted policing efforts aimed at bringing those responsible to justice.
“Mr Speaker, I’m advised by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service that the response to those activities in Central includes intelligence-led operations, targeted patrols, and investigative efforts to identify those responsible for such heinous crime. However, Mr Speaker, for operational reasons, I will not disclose specifically what our intentions are.”
When asked whether any arrests had been made, Minister Alexander declined to comment, saying any disclosure could undermine ongoing investigations.
“From the time we do that, other persons who may be involved believe that the police are being assisted by that particular individual. So, Mr Speaker, I want to leave that at this time. All I can say is that the matter continues to be investigated, and we wait on the outcome from law enforcement.”
The Minister cited a 46% decrease in crime and maintained that there has not been an increase in robberies or home invasions.
He also noted that the Police Service is in talks with local banking institutions to address potential threats to customers.
“The emphasis is not just on law enforcement. But law enforcement continues to have conversations with the banking system. The banking system that has persons going in the ordinary section of the bank and withdrawing large sums of money, you hearing the machine moving about, and you hear the machine moving about. And as a result of that, Mr. Speaker, it is a total risk.”
Business owners and citizens are also being cautioned to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves from criminal elements when conducting financial transactions.
