Chief Secretary Farley Augustine says a date for the THA elections will be announced soon.
Speaking at the launch of UNICEF’s “Our City, Through Our Eyes” programme in Port of Spain on Thursday afternoon, he reminded that the window in which the election must be called lies between January 12th and February 12th.
“The date will come soon, sooner than you think.”
Reflecting on his administration’s performance over the last four years, Mr. Augustine noted that a significant amount of resources was invested on the island.
“Ensuring that we keep the Tobago economy afloat, ensuring that we kept the people employed, that we embarked on new public infrastructure projects, that we invest in young people and children. We have spent more on school repairs in a four-year period, than any previous administration, spent more on gratuities, increments than any other administration. We raised the salaries of URP and CEPEP workers, long before it was raised here in Trinidad.”
Responding to comments on the Studley Park receiving its long-awaited export licence, allowing the quarry to sell aggregate abroad, the Chief Secretary sought to quell pessimistic opinions.
“That’s not true at all. In fact, the opposition wants to see Tobago remain beggars at the national table as opposed to utilising its resources. It’s critical to appreciate that the export licence gives us the ability to collateralise the facility, to get the necessary equipment to improve production levels. We do in fact have significant quantity of material in the ground. It is just to extract a bit more of it and we’d be able to manage both the local and international demand.”
The Chief Secretary said his administration delivered on their mantra to fix Tobago, and they can only get better.
