Government Formally Asks CARICOM For Transparency

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says Government is moving to ensure transparency following a diplomatic dispute within CARICOM.

In a statement, Persad-Bissessar confirmed that correspondence from Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Sean Sobers has been made public. This follows the leak of a letter from St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Terrance Drew dated April 8th.

She is calling on the CARICOM Secretariat to clarify reports that Minister Sobers was disinvited from a recent retreat.

Meanwhile, Government has formally challenged the reappointment process of CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett, describing it as flawed.

In a letter dated April 9th, Minister Sobers disputed how the decision on Barnett’s second term was reached, arguing proper procedures were not followed.

Trinidad and Tobago is now demanding records and says it will not engage further without greater transparency. The CARICOM Secretariat has not yet responded.
